‘Hugot’ for the Healthy
Most of you would probably agree that the youth-famous craze, highly cheesy “hugot lines” about love and broken-heartedness wouldn’t do this generation’s emotional and psychological health and well-being any positive influence. However, it seems that we cannot say the same about the “hugot lines” that were recently posted in Facebook by Cavite National High School –Junior High School students.
The #cnhsnutritionmonth went viral as the students’ creative minds playfully fused their usual “heart talks” with proper diet and nutrition. Spearheaded by the CNHS-JHS Supreme Student Government (SSG), the craze is in-line with the school’s celebration of the 2019 Nutrition Month Celebration.
Some posts went all-in cheesy as JHS student Shailla Ryn Delos Reyes’ entry, “Kumain ka ng gulay kung ayaw mong maaga mamatay sa pag mamahal ko habang buhay.”
The broken-hearted will probably relate to SHS student Ruzelle Santos Anastacio’s line that went “Kumain ng kalabasa, Para malinawan ka na walang kayo talaga,” and JHS student Aivan Howell Roldan’s “Kumain ka ng sitaw, samahan mo na rin ng bataw, para matuto kang bumitaw sa taong ang mahal ay hindi na ikaw.”
Filipino Department’s Ms. Kim Ann Borromeo belted out a couple verses of what seems to be a reminder for the youth. Her entry ended with, “Walang silbi ang pagkain mo ng gulay kung sa relasyon niyo’y ‘di mo naman ina-apply. Malusog man ang iyong pangangatawan, tiyak, ikaw ay kanya pa ring iiwan.”
“The Supreme Student Government conceptualized the idea of hugot/joke for the Nutrition Month. However, the organization was a little doubtful if it will be a hit, or if the students will participate at all,” expressed Mr. Reymie Sosa from CNHS-JHS English Department, co-adviser of the current student council.
Mr. Sosa further expressed how their doubts were proven wrong as, surprisingly, not only students from junior high and senior high, but as well as teachers started taking part in the activity. With prizes as simple as jars of Stick-O at stake, the competition for the best ‘hugot’ line went stiff with entries after entries that have been posted.
With all the wit and humor involved in the competition, Mr. Sosa considers this as a modern way of slogan-making.
“The goal of this activity was to simply have a fun way of raising awareness that July is the month of Nutrition,” the SPG co-adviser further added.
This is in connection with the National Nutrition Council’s aim which is to promote the consumption of healthy diet, as stated in the 2019 Nutrition Month theme “Kumain nang wasto at maging aktibo… push natin ‘to!”.
Whether it could possibly positively affect their students’ diet or not is not for us to say. One sure thing is that not only the students and the campus benefitted from the craze, but a community of individuals who were reminded of a country-wide fete mandated by our government.
